Discounts for Customer Groups

Restricting a discount to a customer group — wholesale buyers, a loyalty tier, whoever you've grouped together — means it only ever applies to the people it's meant for, instead of you having to remember to check eligibility at the register yourself.

How Group-Restricted Discounts Work

Access requirements. Same "Promotions" permission as any other discount — there's no separate permission for restricting one to a customer group.

  • Available on almost every discount type. "Limited to customer groups" appears on Item, Case, Mix-and-match, Bundle, BOGO, and Cart size discounts. The only type that doesn't have it is the legacy Manual discount.

  • A customer only needs to match one selected group, not all of them. Select more than one group, and a customer qualifies by belonging to any one of them — not by belonging to every group you picked.

  • It never applies to a sale with no customer attached. A walk-in sale with no customer on the order can never qualify for a group-restricted discount, no matter how the rest of the discount is set up.

  • It's a separate check from your other conditions, not part of the "match all/any" toggle. That toggle only governs your department/price/brand-style conditions — customer-group restriction is always an additional requirement on top of those, never one of the options the toggle switches between.

  • It won't show up in the eligibility preview or "Check item eligibility." Both only evaluate product-level conditions — checking a single item has no customer attached to it, so there's nothing for either tool to check the group restriction against. Don't rely on them to confirm the customer-group part is set up correctly.

  • Deleting a group a discount depends on doesn't fail loudly. The discount just quietly stops matching anyone who was only eligible through that group — there's no warning when this happens.

Restricting a Discount to a Customer Group

Step 1

Open the discount — either a new one you're building, or an existing one from the Discounts list.

Step 2

Under "General info," find "Limited to customer groups" and select one or more groups. Leave it empty to allow any customer (including one with no customer at all attached, as long as the discount's other conditions are otherwise met).

Step 3

Save the discount.

Troubleshooting

  • A group-restricted discount isn't applying for a customer you'd expect: confirm they're actually in one of the selected groups right now — group membership can change, and nothing alerts you when someone drops out of eligibility.

  • It's not applying to any walk-in customers: that's expected — group-restricted discounts require a customer to be attached to the order at all, so a no-customer sale can never qualify.

  • The eligibility preview or "Check item eligibility" says an item qualifies, but it isn't discounting for a real customer: neither tool checks the customer-group restriction — confirm eligibility against an actual order with that customer attached, not the preview.

  • A discount that used to work for a group seems broken after that group was deleted: the discount doesn't get cleaned up automatically when a group is deleted — open it, reselect the groups you actually want, and save it again.
