Notifications
"Ecomm Terminal Alerts" may not be available for all stores yet.
How Notifications Settings Work
Access requirements differ by page. "In-Browser Ecomm Alerts" is deliberately loose — registering a device is treated as an everyday operational task rather than a settings change — while the other two pages need real Settings access.
Page | To see it | To change it |
In-Browser Ecomm Alerts | Settings view access, or view access to "Ecommerce transactions" | Settings edit access, or view access to "Ecommerce transactions" |
Ecomm Store Alerts | Settings view access | Settings edit access |
Ecomm Terminal Alerts | Settings view access | Settings edit access |
Only shows up with ecommerce order integration turned on. If your account doesn't have ecommerce order integration, "Notifications" doesn't appear under Settings at all — there's no placeholder or explanation; it's simply not there.
Separate pages sharing one nav item, not tabs on one form. "In-Browser Ecomm Alerts," "Ecomm Store Alerts" and "Ecomm Terminal Alerts" are their own pages, each with their own Save.
Three different alert channels for the same event. An in-browser alert notifies whoever's looking at that specific device; an email alert goes to one address per store, regardless of who's logged in anywhere; a register alert sounds on the registers you pick for that store. Most merchants want both an in-browser and an email alert set up.
Not the same as the Gift Card email-recipient setting. That's a separate toggle under Gift Cards for whether a gift card recipient gets an email — unrelated to this page, despite both being about email notifications.
Where to Access Each Feature
To… | Go to |
Set up in-browser order alerts and pair a receipt printer on this device | Settings → Notifications → "In-Browser Ecomm Alerts" |
Set an email address for new-order alerts at a store | Settings → Notifications → "Ecomm Store Alerts" |
Choose which registers play ecommerce order alerts | Settings → Notifications → "Ecomm Terminal Alerts" |
Setting Up In-Browser Alerts
Step 1
Click on "Settings" in the left-menu bar, then click on "Notifications." This opens on "In-Browser Ecomm Alerts."
Step 2
Enter a "Device name" for this browser/device — it's required, and helps you tell devices apart if you're setting this up on more than one.
Step 3
Under "Receive order alerts on this device for these stores," select which store(s) this device should get alerts for.
Step 4
Click "Save."
Note: these settings are per browser, on this specific device — setting them up here doesn't carry over to a different computer or tablet. Each device that should get alerts needs its own device name and store selection.
Pairing a Receipt Printer
Still on "In-Browser Ecomm Alerts" — this is what a "Print receipt" click in an ecommerce order uses.
Step 5
Under "Receipt printer," click "Connect receipt printer." Your browser will prompt you to pick a USB device — select your printer.
Step 6
Once connected, click "Print test receipt" to confirm it's working.
Going back to PDF receipts: once a printer is paired, a "Forget this printer" button appears next to "Connect receipt printer" — it's there whether or not the printer is currently plugged in. Click it and this device goes back to exporting receipts as PDFs. You can pair again from this same page whenever you want.
Important: this pairing only works in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, and only for the browser and device you paired it on — a different browser, a different computer, or a cleared browser profile all need to be paired again from scratch. Nothing about this is saved to your account server-side.
Setting an Email Alert for New Orders
Step 7
Click on "Settings" in the left-menu bar, then click on "Notifications," then click "Ecomm Store Alerts."
Step 8
On a multi-location account, use the store selector to pick which store you're setting this up for.
Step 9
Enter an "Alert email address." Whoever reads that inbox gets an email the moment a new ecommerce order comes in for that store.
Step 10
Click "Save."
Choosing Which Registers Play Order Alerts
Registers you pick here sound an alert when an ecommerce order comes in, is adjusted, or is cancelled — on top of the in-browser and email alerts above.
Step 11
Click on "Settings" in the left-menu bar, then click on "Notifications," then click "Ecomm Terminal Alerts."
Step 12
On a multi-location account, use the store selector to pick which store you're setting this up for.
Step 13
Under "Play ecommerce order alerts on these registers," select the register(s) that should alert. Only registers at the selected store are listed.
Step 14
Click "Save."
Note: this is set per store, and saving replaces that store's whole list at once — whatever's selected when you save is exactly what gets alerts there. Save with nothing selected and no register at that store plays ecommerce order alerts, though in-browser and email alerts carry on as normal. Set it up separately for each store on a multi-location account.
What It Looks Like
On "In-Browser Ecomm Alerts," the receipt printer status reads one of three ways: "No receipt printer connected yet" if you haven't paired one, "Configured, but no receipt printer is detected — plug it in via USB" if you paired one before but it's not currently connected, or "Connected to {printer name}" once it's ready. You don't need to reload the page to see it change — unplug the printer, plug it back in, or wake a sleeping tablet, and the status updates on its own.
In an ecommerce order, if you've paired a printer but it isn't currently detected, the order panel shows "Receipt printer not detected." with two ways forward. "Reconnect printer" lets you pick the printer again right there, then prints the receipt. "Use PDF instead" asks you to confirm first, then unpairs the printer and opens the receipt as a PDF — because the pairing belongs to the browser, that takes everyone using that tablet off printed receipts until someone pairs again from Settings.
On a device you've set up to receive order alerts, you may see a "Tap to enable order sounds" prompt in the top-right corner, with the line "Order alerts are silent until you do." Browsers block sound until someone interacts with the page, so until you tap it, alerts arrive on screen with no chime. Tap the prompt and it plays the alert sound straight away as proof it works, then goes away. A device set up for alerts also tries to keep its screen awake while the page is open, so a tablet left on this screen doesn't sleep through an order.
Troubleshooting
"Notifications" doesn't show up under Settings: your account doesn't have ecommerce order integration turned on — this page isn't available without it.
You can't get to "Ecomm Store Alerts": it only shows up for users with actual Settings access — a cashier with just Ecommerce transactions access can manage in-browser alerts but not this page.
You paired a receipt printer, but it's not connected on a different computer: that's expected — pairing is tied to one browser on one device, not your account. Pair it again on each device that needs to print.
Receipt printing says it's not supported: it only works in Chrome or Edge — try one of those if you're on a different browser.
You're not getting email alerts for new orders: check "Ecomm Store Alerts" for the store in question — the email field may be blank, or set to an address no one's checking anymore.
