Edit a Product Name
How Product Names Work
Access requirements. Edit access to the "Product list" permission — same access as the rest of the Products area.
There are three separate name-related fields, not one. "Name" on the product family, and "Size name override" and "Short name" on each pack size. None of them is quite "the item's name" by itself — each does something different.
What shows on the register and receipts is assembled, not typed directly. It's the family's Name plus an auto-built size description (volume, container type, pack count). You influence that size part by filling in Volume/Container type/Pack size, or you can replace it entirely with "Size name override."
Renaming shows up on past sales in Back Office and on the digital receipt link — but not on the register itself. Changing a name changes how that item reads on past orders in Back Office and on the emailed/exported digital receipt right away. The terminal's own on-register transaction history is the one exception — it keeps showing the name exactly as it was at the moment of that sale.
Container-type abbreviations (like "BT" for bottle) and all-caps formatting aren't something you control. Those are configured per account by Scotch staff — if you want "Bottle" spelled out instead of "BT," or don't want everything in all caps, that's a support request, not a setting you can find here.
A name has to be unique in your catalog. Two active products can't share the exact same Name. If the name you want is already taken, the safe fix is to pick a different one. The form also offers a Merge option, but that is not a rename — it moves this product's pack sizes into the other product and permanently deletes this one. See "Renaming a Product" below before you use it.

Renaming a Product
Step 1
Open the product family you want to rename.

Edit "Name," then save.
Note: if your account displays names in all caps, whatever you type here gets capitalized automatically when you save — that's expected, not a glitch.
Important: this changes how the item reads on past orders in Back Office, and on the digital receipt link, right away — those aren't locked in at the time of sale. The one exception is the register's own on-terminal transaction history, which keeps showing the name as it was at the moment of that sale.
If the name is already taken: the "Name" field is flagged with a message that continues from the field's own label — "…has already been taken. Use the existing product or create one with a different name." Just below it, a red box names the product that already uses that name and offers a Merge into [that product] button. The box says "variants" where this article says pack sizes — they're the same thing.
Merging is not another way to rename — it deletes this product. Choosing Merge into moves every pack size out of the product you're editing and into the product that already has the name, then deletes the product you're editing. You're asked to confirm first, with this prompt: "Move all of this item's variants into [that product] and delete this item? This can't be undone." — again, "variants" means this product's pack sizes, and "item" means the product you're currently editing. There is no undo. The pack sizes that move keep their own sizes, stock, and history, but from that point on they read under the other product's Name. If the two are genuinely different products, type a different name and save instead. If you do go ahead, you'll get a "Merged into existing product" confirmation and land on the other product's page — the product you were editing no longer exists, so there's nothing to go back to.
Adjusting How a Pack Size's Name Reads

Open that pack size's own edit form within Edit -> Item Details

Watch "Full name" as you fill in Volume, Container type, and Pack size — it previews exactly what will show on the register and receipts, built live from those fields.

If you need the size portion to read differently than what's auto-built, type it into "Size name override." This replaces the whole auto-built size description, not just part of it.
Note: text you type into "Size name override" doesn't get the all-caps treatment even if your account uses it elsewhere — it shows up exactly as you typed it.
Changing Only the Shelf Label Text

In the same form, use "Short name" to set text that appears only on printed shelf labels. It has no effect on the register, receipts, or the "Full name" preview.
Troubleshooting
You typed a name in mixed case and it saved in all caps: expected if your account has all-caps names turned on — it applies automatically, and there's no way to bypass it from here.
You want "Bottle" spelled out instead of "BT" (or a different abbreviation for cans, kegs, and so on): those abbreviations are configured by Scotch staff per account — contact support to change them.
An old order in Back Office, or a digital receipt link, shows a name that doesn't match what you remember selling: that's expected — a rename updates how those display right away, since neither one is locked in at the time of sale.
A past sale looked up directly on the register still shows the old name after a rename: that's also expected, and it works the opposite way — the terminal's own transaction history keeps the name exactly as it was when that sale happened, so a rename won't change what shows there.
You typed something into "Size name override" but the register still shows the old text: double-check you saved the form — the "Full name" preview should update as soon as you type it, before you even save.
"Short name" doesn't match what's showing at the register: expected — "Short name" only affects printed shelf labels, not the register or receipts.
